While cost is important to patients seeking care, insurance coverage and convenience are among the most important decision-making considerations, according to JLL (Chicago)’s new Healthcare Patient Consumer Survey for global commercial real estate and investment management.
The current survey examines what patients think about when they seek medical care and how location and convenience impact the care experience. Coupled with the quality of service and facility convenience, this translates into positive experiences that drive patients to return to a particular provider.
“It’s not surprising that cost to patients is the most important factor, but convenience is also a key factor in healthcare decisions,” said Jay Johnson, US practice director for healthcare markets at JLL, in a press release. “Patients want to be treated quickly and be able to get on with their day. By providing a broad coverage network and optimizing location selection, providers can offer convenient care to patients, which has been shown to improve the overall patient experience and likelihood of returning to a provider.”
A strong location strategy can improve both outreach and positive outcomes, says Alison Flynn Gaffney, president of JLL’s health division, in a press release. For example, making locations convenient by placing them near other errands, in retail stores, or in small neighborhood offices can improve the patient experience.
The survey also found that older generations are more likely to seek preventive care than younger generations, who are more reactive in seeking care and waiting for an urgent or urgent need. Additionally, the survey indicates that telemedicine adoption continues to be at a steady pace, which means providers need to incorporate telemedicine into their space planning.
